Tips for Meeting Word Count

If you are under the word count

Expand on your arguments with specific examples. Add transitions between paragraphs. Include counterarguments and address them. Check if you have covered all parts of the assignment rubric.

If you are over the word count

Cut redundant phrases ("in order to" becomes "to", "due to the fact that" becomes "because"). Remove filler words and unnecessary adverbs. Tighten sentences by combining related ideas. Check if any paragraphs repeat the same point in different words.

What counts toward word limits

Unless your professor says otherwise: the body text, in-text citations, headings, and footnotes count. Title pages, reference lists, appendices, and figure captions usually do not. Always check the rubric.

Questions

About 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced in 12pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. It takes roughly 3-4 minutes to read silently and 7-8 minutes to read aloud as a presentation.

Approximately 1,250 words single-spaced or 2,500 words double-spaced with standard formatting (12pt font, 1-inch margins). Font choice matters - Times New Roman has more words per page than Arial.

In most university courses, the word count does NOT include the reference list, bibliography, title page, or appendices unless specified. In-text citations (like Smith, 2024) are typically counted. Always check your assignment rubric.

The average adult reads about 200-250 words per minute for academic texts and 250-300 for leisure reading. Speaking pace in presentations averages 130-150 words per minute. This tool uses 238 wpm for reading and 140 wpm for speaking.
